Our family spent the Labor Day weekend at my Mom and Dad’s home. It is the home where I grew up and the home My husband now calls the “Salva retreat center”. Their home is very clean, quiet and always has wonderful smells coming from the kitchen. Both my Mom and Dad show such gracious hospitality. We all enjoy this relaxing time away. It is such a joy making memories and watching our children making memories!
Up until a little over two years ago, our visits always included time with my sweet Grandma. In her later years she wasn’t as active as in the past, but she was always there to sit with and talk to. She always had a hug for you and of course a kiss, often leaving behind some bright red or hot pink lipstick. She was very happy to be told she didn’t look a day over 80! That was quite a compliment at her age! On June 13th, at 97 years young, she went to be with the Lord. She would have been 100 years old on August 21st of this year. She often remarked that she wanted to make it to 100.
In their earlier years, Grandma Grace and Grandpa Elmer would host our family holiday gatherings and many family dinners other times throughout the year. There would always be homemade cookies & pies and often, freshly fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy. We especially enjoyed her homemade buns…hot from the oven. She would bake for hours, making dozens of rolls. Through the years we would smile as we joked about “grandma’s buns…”. You can imagine! Floods of family memories come as I write!
Well, on this trip home, in honor of Grandma’s buns…hot from the oven, I made a recipe I found on Pinterest. With this great recipe, I was able to make a “substitute” Grandma bun in 30 minutes! The smells from the oven brought back all the family memories of the years with Grandma. Remembering is so sweet. One of my favorite things about the stories is that Grandma Grace will live on in our children. They will know of her gracious love, her bright lipstick and of course, her buns!
I’m not sure if it’s fair for you to post that w/out a link to the recipe…. Glad you enjoyed your substitute G-ma’s buns 🙂
Thank you Susan! If you click on the photo of the buns you will find the recipe. Please let me know if that doesn’t work. I should have been more clear. 🙂
