It is Well With My Soul by Horatio Spafford

This is one of my all time favorite hymns! It has encouraged my soul over and over again and reminded me of the joy of knowing that because of Christ’s work on the Cross on my behalf, it is well with my soul…even when life’s circumstances don’t make sense.

Horatio Spafford had been through perhaps the most difficult tragedy of his life. After having lost their son to scarlet fever and lost much of their fortune to the Great Chicago Fire, He then lost his dear daughters in a sunken ship taking them and his wife/their mother to Europe. As he himself was on a ship to go and get his wife after this great loss, he penned the words to this song. Though he had lost so much, he knew that it was well with his soul. His faith in God and his love for God didn’t falter…this hymn, written in 1890, still ministers to so many today and reminds us of God’s faithfulness to our souls, even when “sorrows like sea billows roll”.

Read the words slowly and let them sink in. Then, the link is available below for you as well.

I thank God for this hymn and for the encouraging example of Horatio Spafford. I thank God that it is well with MY soul too!

It is Well With My Soul

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

Refrain:
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
Let this blessed assurance control,
That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
And hath shed His own blood for my soul.

Refrain:
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!
My sin, not in part but the whole,
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

Refrain:
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

For me, be it Christ, be it Christ hence to live:
If Jordan above me shall roll,
No pang shall be mine, for in death as in life
Thou wilt whisper Thy peace to my soul.

Refrain:
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

But, Lord, ’tis for Thee, for Thy coming we wait,
The sky, not the grave, is our goal;
Oh, trump of the angel! Oh, voice of the Lord!
Blessed hope, blessed rest of my soul!

Refrain:
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight,
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll;
The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend,
Even so, it is well with my soul.

Refrain:
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

blessings!
