November 3rd – Day 3 of Thankfulness

Today is Saturday and we started the day one of my favorite ways. We fed our little one, and then he, and my husband and I climbed into our minivan and headed to get coffee and take a walk near the beach. We like to go to a local Peet’s Coffee and participate in the community that takes place over a cup of specialty coffee and a toasted bagel. There are individuals and families everywhere, mostly dressed in sweats and yoga pants. The women have ponytails and the men hats. You see people with all type of dogs from tiny to the size of a small horse. You also see children still in their pajamas with award-winning bed head. You find those who are past the years of raising children telling about their adventures. And, parents, you find parents smiling and enjoying conversation with one another as if they have all of the time in the world.

I think that is one of the things that strikes me the most. The cares of the world seem to drift away on Saturday mornings at Peet’s. No one is rushing. No one seems to notice that there is a huge line keeping them from their coffee. It isn’t clear what type of job anyone has or what type of car anyone drives or even which house anyone lives in. You don’t know anything about the grades their children have or who scored the most goals at last week’s soccer game. People are there just smiling and enjoying their Saturday mornings together, in community.

So, today I am thankful for our Saturday morning rest and for our time at Peet’s. I am thankful for the time to think about the important things instead of the urgent. I am thankful for our little boy who smiles at everyone and brightens their day. I am thankful for everyone who stops and talks with him and us and brightens our day. I am thankful for the rest my daughter is able to have as she sleeps in and then catches up on a good book. I am thankful that my son has a day without classes where he can study and unwind and be with his roommates. I am thankful for the time to slow down and enjoy all of the little things.

What are you thankful for today? Blessings!
