Did you Know you CAN Paint a Linoleum Floor???

Ok, maybe I am the last to know…but, I discovered that you can PAINT a linoleum floor! Do you know what this meant to me?? I could finally do something about my “not so nice” kitchen floor. I have tried to ignore it…so much so, that I couldn’t even describe it to my mom over the phone. 🙂

So, instead of describing it here…here is the before photo: (some of my photos are sideways…I lost the editing war, but didn’t want to put the post off any longer.) 🙂

Before Painting the Linoleum Floor

See what I mean…even though it didn’t stand out as the most disturbing floor ever, it did drag down the look of our kitchen. I am amazed at the difference after painting it! It is all refreshed and fits the style of the rest of our home much better. I even like the tile on the counters more after the paint job.

It does take some time…first sanding, then priming, and then painting and then the second coat, but it is SO worth it!

My daughter and I undertook this task on a Saturday when my husband was out-of-town with our almost two-year old. And, our littlest was visiting his aunt for the day. We had the perfect time to work hard without the risk of sweet little feet pitter pattering on the wet paint. 🙂

We used Behr Premium Porch and Patio Paint and a good primer and 220 grade sand paper. Here is what it looked like all primed:

And, now, the finished product:

You CAN Paint Linoleum!!!

We are thrilled with the look! The only downside we see is that the new floor shows dirt a little more than the old floor. But, in my opinion, that is totally worth it…I’ll let you know if I still feel that way in a few months. 🙂

Here are some links to others who were inspirational to me and have done a beautiful job!

LOVE IT! I was gearing up this week hoping I could paint my floor as a birthday gift to myself, but our garbage disposal broke, so I have all kinds of under the sink stuff on my floor in the way.

SO unique and exactly what I love aesthetic wise.

  5. Oooo, it’s so pretty! I must have looked funny turning my head sideways to get the full effect of your photos 🙂 Thanks for linking up to Let’s Get Real!

Nicole, thank you for enduring my sideways photos :). I gave in after spending quite some time trying to turn them. :). Funny thing is that the photos aren’t turned that way as original data files. :). Have a wonderful day!!

  6. It looks great! I had no idea you could pain linoleum. I would love to hear how it holds up over time. Thanks so much for sharing this with our Let’s Get Real readers. I hope you come back to visit us often.

Thank you Christina! I will post again after some time has passed to update on durability. My understanding is that it will last for years to come…I hope I am right :). Blessings!

  7. Mary Anne says:

Looks great! Did you put a sealer on top and what do you think about painting laminate flooring? Thanks, Mary Anne

    • Diane Marie Haller says:

Thank you Maryanne! We contemplated sealing it, but ran out of time before my 2 year old was coming home from a trip with my husband :). It would be shinier if I would have done so. I am really happy with it how it is also though. My understanding is that the porch and patio paint would also work on laminate flooring. I would ask at Lowes or Home Depot to be sure. It is super durables since it is made to be outside in the weather.

  8. I LOVE the color that you used! I’d be interested in knowing how well it holds up after the heavy usage that a kitchen floor gets. It turned out gorgeous though! We’ll be featuring this over at Someday Crafts tomorrow! 🙂

    • Diane Marie Haller says:

Thank you so much Miranda! I am hopeful that it will have a long life since it was made for outside, but time will tell :). I will write another post to update everyone after some time has passed.
Thank you again for the feature! I am honored! Blessings!

  9. It totally transforms your kitchen! Love it! Great minds think alike, however it wasn’t linoleum I painted, it was my subfloor and it looks to be the same exact color!!!! Is it Heritage Teal? Anyhow, I couldn’t take the stainted carpet anymore, so I ripped it out and painted the subfloor over the summer. Doesn’t that color just make you happy?!

  10. So how is it holding up? Are dirt and stains attaching to it or did you decide to seal it?

    • Diane Marie Haller says:

Hi Kristina! Thank you for asking…I have been meaning to post. The floor is holding up great! It still shows dirt, but it comes up pretty easily with a “sponge mop” and a little warm water and pine sol. We are so glad for the change. While sealing hasn’t been necessary, I think if I did this again, I would still seal it. We really like the new color and how it brightens up our whole kitchen.

Can you please post the color you used? Behr has over 2,000 🙂
Just loved looking at your post, so inspiring.

    • Diane Marie Haller says:

Hi Donna! So sorry for my delayed response…we have since moved from our sweet home by the beach to the foothills so I didn’t have my extra paint in the garage…I can’t believe I didn’t include the color! So sorry! I went to Home Depot and checked the colors and it was either Aqua Marble or Heritage Teal…I am leaning toward it being the Aqua Marble. So glad you enjoyed the post. That floor was such a blessing and really brightened our kitchen so much!

  12. Mary Cape says:

More than one year later, how does the floor look? Is this a beach house? I am contemplating paint an old linoleum at a beach house but I worried about durability. Hope you still love it.

    Thank you.

    • Diane Marie Haller says:

Hi Mary, There are a couple of chips, but it still looks great. I moved from this home about 3 months ago, but we were 6 miles from the beach and decorated in those colors and accents. The floor was one of the unique features that the new owner really liked. Pretty good for what was old, ugly linoleum. 🙂

I would do it again in a heartbeat. My new home has tile and I prefer my old floor. One of the links I reference talks about putting a sealing coat on top…I think that is a great idea…I just ran out of time before my little one and husband returned home from a trip so I skipped that step. Blessings!
