A Surprisingly Strong Smell…

This morning, while the whole house was quiet, I decided to get ahead of the game. We are attending a Baby Shower today and bringing a fresh fruit platter and then an Eagle Scout Court of Honor tomorrow, where we are bringing a large pot of chili. And, it is the weekend, and I want to be sure to leave lots of free time to be together as a family. So, in the stillness of the morning, I began the pot of chili.

The ground beef was browned, along with the veggies and the spices. The tomatoes were chopped and in the pool. The great northern beans were in, as were the pintos. It was smelling and looking GOOD! Then came the late thought…I should add some black beans. That would add some more color and variety. Bad decision…I opened the can, and it was a little hard to open. It seemed to be bent on the top. No big deal…just muscle through it! I won the battle and then poured the beans into the beautifully bubbly chili.

Guess what….that little dent, had a little hole. That little hole, let in lots of air. Those black beans were severely spoiled. And, now, so was the chili! I have never smelled anything so awful. I had the fleeting thought of scooping off the bad beans and moving forward…that was not happening! My husband came out of the bedroom with this look on his face, saying without words, what is that awful smell? Even hours later when I went to the store to repurchase the ingredients, I couldn’t even look at the can of black beans without thoughts of getting sick. I may never eat a black bean again. 🙂

This post is kind of like when you taste or smell something really bad and you say to the person you love, standing next to you, “This smells/tastes awful! Here, smell/taste it too!” We like to share the highs and the LOWS. So, this is my way of saying, I had this smelly experience, please join me…feel sorry for me. 🙂 I am sure you have had your share of smelly tales…please share, it is quite fun to do so…you will see! You feel so much better!

Hope your day is without any spoiled canned goods…well anything that is spoiled at all! Blessings to you!

My kitchen disaster to share…It SMELLED good and I’m sure it TASTED good, but was ruined. We were dispersing out 5 gallon drum of honey into quart mason jars. We got tired of waiting for the slow honey on this cold winter night, so we propped up the drum, went into the other room to watch tv and check periodically. You can imagine what happened…We forgot and suddenly Gary shouted..THE HONEY!!!!! It had filled the current jar, most of the counter and run down the side of the cabinet onto the CARPET creating an 18″ pool of honey on the floor! (Who puts carpeting in a kitchen????) The honey was wasted, the money was wasted, and the carpet, though we cleaned and cleaned, was never the same. There was always a dirty looking 18″ circle in the kitchen, till we bought the house and tore out the carpet.

Your story reminds me of my own chili disaster….One evening after dinner, I was putting some of our left over chili into freezer bags to freeze to have for dinner another time. This is what I always do. As I was putting the gallon bag of chili into our extra freezer in the garage I fleeting thought, “I sure am glad my bags have never broken and spilled all over the garage floor.” Just as I finished thinking it, and with the freezer door open, it happened. Chili splattered all over both the open freezer and all over the garage floor. Huge mess! Our garage smelled like chili for quite a while after that!

    • That Chili smell has quite a way of sticking around. I am sure that was a mess you will never forget! Thank you for sharing! 🙂 Somehow it makes everything better when you share your mishaps with others! 🙂
