Still, My Soul Be Still – Keith and Kristyn Getty

There is a concept that has been revolutionary to me in my Christian life. I first understood it when I read Loving God with All Your Mind by Elizabeth George. You also see it when the Psalmist, in Psalm 43:5 says, “Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him for the help of His countenance.” The Psalmist is talking to his own soul.

The concept is talking to yourself instead of listening to yourself. You know…it is Monday morning. It is time to get out of bed, but you are tired. You have two choices. One, you can hear your own thoughts crying out very loudly to stay in bed. Or, your second choice, tell yourself, “This is the day that the Lord made! I will rejoice and be glad in it.” We can listen to our thoughts, which can be fickle at times, or we can tell ourselves the truth.

This song has been useful to me in my life when I need to tell myself the truth. In the first stanza, while it is true that winds of change may come, it is more true that God is at my side.

In the chorus, I can sing along and remind myself that God is my God and he is trustworthy and I don’t have to be shaken. He can help me to rest in Him alone!

Continuing on, I am reminded to not be charmed by the things of the world that promise momentary pleasure…they are lesser and fleeting. I must hold onto His ways.

And, in the fourth stanza, I am charged to hold on to the truth and be patient to see it worked out in my life. He is worthy of our patience and hope will rise.

Well, I don’t know about you, but I need to hear this. And, even more so, I need to remind myself daily. When my thoughts betray my True Love, These thoughts of truth draw me back. They give me peace in the midst of life’s daily disturbances.

Read slowly and let these precious truths sink into your heart. Then, listen below and sing along. Perhaps you will find yourself talking to yourself instead of listening to yourself with these truths today. 🙂

Blessings!

Still my soul be still
And do not fear
Though winds of change may rage tomorrow
God is at your side
No longer dread
The fires of unexpected sorrow

God You are my God
And I will trust in You and not be shaken
Lord of peace renew
A steadfast spirit within me
To rest in You alone

Still my soul be still
Do not be moved
By lesser lights and fleeting shadows
Hold onto His ways
With shield of faith
Against temptations flaming arrows

Still my soul be still
Do not forsake
The Truth you learned in the beginning
Wait upon the Lord
And hope will rise As stars appear when day is dimming
